Algeria had to come from behind to beat South Africa 3-1 in their opening African Cup of Nations Group C game at the Estadio de Mongomo.

Thuso Phala gave Bafana Bafana the lead on 51 minutes and Tokelo Rantie could put the game out of sight just minutes later when he missed from the penalty spot.

Rantie’s miss proved to be costly as Thulani Hlatshwayo scored an own goal and Faouzi Ghoulam put Algeria ahead just five minutes later.

Islam Slimani secured all three points with Algeria’s third goal of the evening.

Trabzonspor defender Carl Medjani played the full 90 minutes against South Africa.

Medjani joined the Black Sea Storm on a free transfer from Monaco in the summer and already has five goals and one assist this season.

The 29-year-old defender has two goals in 37 international caps for Algeria.

The Desert Fox’s moved into first place in Group C following the win and face Ghana next.
