“Turkish players have to realise that they must train a lot harder,” Taffarel said.

“Take Arda for example, he played at a slower tempo here, he could get away with walking for much of the game but when he went to Spain he realised he had to work a lot harder to compete, his whole mentality changed, it was a wake up call.”

Taffarel has been goalkeeper coach at Galatasaray since 2011.

The Galatasaray legend won the Turkish league, Turkish Cup, UEFA Cup and Super Cup during his playing days in Turkey.

Turan was highly rated at Galatasaray but often criticised for not working hard enough.

The Turkish international is renowned for his assiduousness today at Atletico Madrid.

Arda joined Atletico Madrid from Galatasaray back in 2011 for €15 million.

The Turkish attacking midfielder has become an integral part of Simeone’s side since arriving from Galatasaray in 2011.

Turan became the first Turkish international to win the La Liga title last season and he has also won the Europa League, UEFA Super Cup and Copa Del Rey.

The 27-year-old was also part of the Atleti side that reached the Champions League final last season.
