Simeone also praised his goalkeeper Jan Oblak for an outstanding performance against their cross-city rivals.

“We had a great goalkeeper in Jan Oblak who did well, especially with the Gareth Bale chance,” he added.

The Argentinian manager stated that his side were the better team in the second half and that striker Mario Mandžukić put in a great effort.

“We responded in the second half and changed the game, playing in the areas where we needed to play. The second half was more like the match we had imagined. Mario Mandžukić battled really well all game and competed well against Sergio Ramos and Raphaël Varane,” Simeone said.

Turkish international Arda Turan started for Atleti and played the whole 90 minutes.

Turan is the last remaining Turkish player in the Champions League this season.
