Barcelona star slams Turkish national team for missed chances against Latvia

Barcelona winger Arda Turan criticised his Turkish national teammates as well as himself for failing to beat Latvia at the Konya Torku Arena on Thursday 3 September.

“It is not a case of being unlucky we were useless in-front of goal,” Turan was quoted as saying by Habertürk.

“We are creating so many chances but if we are unable to convert it is all pointless. We move onto the next game now which will be like a final it is up to us now.”

Turkey were held to a 1-1 draw against Latvia in the Group A Euro 2016 qualifier. A win would have took the Crescent-Stars into third place as the Netherlands lost 1-0 to Iceland at the Amsterdam Arena.

The Turkish national side dominated Latvia controlling 66 percent possession and having a total of 11 attempts on goal compared to Latvia’s three.

Turkey made over three times as many passes to Latvia and created the majority of goal scoring opportunities but the Crescent-Stars profligacy in-front of goal combined with an inability to deal with aerial balls cost the national team.

The Turkish side has scored just eight goals in the group stages thus far and take on the Netherlands next at the Konya Torku Arena.

Turan is expected to start again against the Dutch side on Sunday 6 September.
