Napoli manager Rafa Benitez revealed that he received an offer to take over Beşiktaş before joining Liverpool.

“I received a great offer from Beşiktaş but it was only a one-year contract so I decided to join Liverpool who put forward a five-year deal,” Benitez told Vatan.

Benitez was appointed Liverpool head coach in 2004-05 and managed the team for six seasons.

The Spanish manager guided Liverpool to the 2004-05 Champions League title and the 2005 UEFA Super Cup.

The experienced coach recorded the highest margin of victory in Champions League history when he led Liverpool to an 8-0 win over Beşiktaş in the 2007-08 group stages.

Benitez took charge of Napoli in 2013 and and won the Coppa Italia as well as the Supercoppa Italiana.

Napoli are currently 3rd in the Serie A. Benitez’s side lost 3-1 on the weekend against Palermo.

The Italian giants are 12 points off league leaders Juventus and five points behind second placed Roma.

Napoli take on Trabzonspor in the Europa League Round of 32 on Thursday 19 February.
