Beşiktaş goalkeeper Cenk Gönen believes he played a part in Dejan Lovren blazing his spot kick over the bar in the penalty shoot out.

The Black Eagles won the Europa League Round of 32 tie against Liverpool on penalties following Lovren’s miss.

“It was important for the team, for the club, for the fans. [For Lovren’s penalty] I waited until the very last moment before he shot. I did not move and I think it played a part in making him miss,” Gönen told the official UEFA website.

Gönen did not actually make a penalty save but he was filling in for first-choice keeper Tolga Zengin.

The Turkish international keeper kept a clean sheet against the Reds in regulation time to keep his third shutout this season.

Liverpool recorded a humiliating 8-0 defeat against Beşiktaş in the 2007-08 Champions League groups stages at Anfield.

Gönen revealed that his side have now made amends for their historic loss against Reds.

“We had a history with Liverpool and I think we have settled the score now,” he added.

Beşiktaş will take on Belgium side Club Brugge in the Europa League Last 16 next.
