Beşiktaş board member Erdal Torunoğulları revealed that they made an offer for Liverpool midfielder Emre Can this summer.

“We were interested in Emre Can and approached him last season while he was at Bayer Leverkusen,” Torunoğulları said.

“He is a great player and impressed our scouts, we could have given him regular first team football but he wanted to try his luck at Liverpool.

“We had talks with Emre, he is a lovely lad and we wish him all the best.

“I really hope he does well at Liverpool, he has the potential to be a great player, maybe he will start playing more regularly by February, who knows.”

Can will be hoping to re-establish himself in the Liverpool first team in time for the Round of 32.

The 20-year-old midfielder has not featured in any of the Reds last six games.

Beşiktaş have been active in the transfer market targeting Turkish players from across Europe.

The Black Eagles recently signed Dutch born and former Arsenal player Oğuzhan Özyakup. Former Fulham winger Kerim Frei and ex-Chelsea youth Gökhan Töre.

Olcay Şahan was born in Germany and Veli Kavlak is an Austrian international of Turkish origin.

Beşiktaş striker Cenk Tosun was also born in Germany.
