Besiktas v Fenerbahce Preview: Ex Arsenal teammates Van Persie & Ozyakup go head to head in derby

Van Persie

Beşiktaş take on leaders Fenerbahçe at the Atatürk Olimpiyat stadium in the first major Istanbul derby of the 2015-16 league campaign.

The Yellow Canaries are undefeated in the league and player-for-player have arguably the strongest squad with recent summer additions including Manchester United duo Luis Nani and Robin van Persie.

Nani and his former United teammate are expected to start after both scoring last week in fact the Portuguese international has been involved in five – assist or goal – out of his sides last six goals.

Beşiktaş meanwhile are not doing too badly themselves and are in red hot form in terms of goal scoring. In fact the Black Eagles have scored the highest number of goals this season (13).

The Black Eagles will be missing long term absentees Tolgay Arslan and Veli Kavlak in midfield but have coped remarkably well without them so far this season.

Fenerbahçe will welcome back Simon Kjaer alongside Bruno Alves in defence and on-loan Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic could get another start after impressing last week.

The derby will see Beşikaş star Oğuzhan Özyakup and former Arsenal youth take on his former teammate Van Persie. Özyakup has stated on numerous occasions that Van Persie took him under his wing at Arsenal and the Dutch striker was invited to his recent birthday party.

Fenerbahçe have players capable of creating something out of nothing but the team still needs time to gel and, as Molde demonstrated, they struggle against well organised counter attacking moves so expect a high scoring derby.
