Brendan Rodgers blames Emre Can red card on Arsenal pitch

Liverpool manager Brendan Rogers defended Emre Can following the red card against Arsenal at the Emirates.

The Reds ended up losing the game 4-1 and suffering a blow to their hopes of finishing the season in the top four.

“I know Emre well enough to know he is not that type of player but unfortunately he got sent off,” Rodgers said speaking to BT Sport.

Rodgers underlined that the pitch surface at the Emirates stadium caused Can to slip and intentionally collide with Danny Welbeck.

“He is not that type of player, I think the second one in all fairness was because the surface here is wonderful surface but it is actually quite slippery and I think he tried to reach around the back with his right foot and he slips with his left foot,” he added.

The sending off was Can’s first since joining Liverpool from Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen in the summer.

The 21-year-old has one assist and one goals in 31 appearances for Liverpool this season.

Can played for the Germany U21 during their 3-2 defeat against England U21 earlier this week.
