Birthday boy Hakan Çalhanoğlu did manage to deliver his side a present when he pulled one back but it proved to be too little to mount a serious comeback.

Çalhanoğlu celebrated his 21st birthday with a goal and a defeat.

The goal was his 8th of the season, the Turkish international has also provided a total of seven assists in all competitions for the Bundesliga outfit this season.

The draw saw Bayer drop into sixth place on 32 points while Werder Bremen climbed up to 8th place on 26 points.

The 21-year-old joined Bayer for €14.5 million this summer – the highest fee ever paid for a Turkish international.

Çalhanoğlu has scored seven direct free-kicks in the Bundesliga despite his young age and is one of the leading free-kick scorers in Europe.
