Bayer Leverkusen star Hakan Çalhanoğlu underlined that his side deserved the 1-0 win over Champions League finalists Atletico Madrid in the Last 16 first leg at the BayArena.

“We were all fully awake and we deserved to win. We know Atlético are very strong at home but if we play like we did tonight, we have a good chance over there,” Çalhanoğlu told the official UEFA website.

The 21-year-old has now scored nine times and provided seven assists in all competitions for the Bundesliga outfit.

Çalhanoğlu joined Bayer for €14.5 million this summer – the highest fee ever paid for a Turkish international.

The win was the Bundesliga outfits first in this stage of the competition.
