“I’m very critical of a lot of the players a lot of the time because I think it’s justified but tonight I thought Mesut Ozil was magnificent. The best I’ve seen him,” Nicholas said speaking on Sky Sports.
Özil has been criticised for not working hard enough and not having an influential role on the team but Nicholas revealed that he though the 26-year-old was assiduous throughout the game.
“He was working his socks off. Everybody tried and everybody gave their very best but they punished themselves. They beat themselves again,” he added.
Özil made two tackles against Monaco, completed 101 passes at an 84 percent accuracy and six successful dribbles – the highest for his team.
The World Cup winner was awarded a 7.81 rating from Whoscored for his performance.
Arsenal were knocked out of the Champions League on away goals despite winning the second leg.
The Gunners take on Newcastle United next in the Premier League. Arsenal are currently second in the league just one point behind second placed Manchester City.
