Dinamo Zagreb 2-1 Arsenal: Mesut Ozil unable to prevent shock defeat

Mesut Ozil

Dinamo Zagreb beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Maksimir stadium to pull off one of the surprise results of the first round of Champions League group stage games.

The Croatian side took an early lead thanks to an own goal from Oxlade Chamberlain and the Gunners night took a turn for the worse when striker Olivier Giroud was sent off for a second yellow card offence on 39 minutes.

Zagreb put the final nail in the coffin on 58 minutes when Fernandes doubled the home sides league. Second half substitute Theo Walcott gave Arsenal a glimmer of hope when he pulled one goal back on 79 minutes but it proved to be too little too late.

Mesut Özil started for the Gunners and had a goal disallowed but failed to really make his mark on the game. Arsenal take on reigning Premier League champions Chelsea next.
