Dortmund star Gundogan will have stadium named after him in Turkey

Dursunbey Belediyespor president Yusuf Turhan has revealed that the clubs new stadium will be named in honour of Borussia Dortmund star İlkay Gündoğan.

The club is based in the Dursunbey district of Balıkesir. Gündoğan’s family originate from the area and his father İrfan who also happens to be his agent has been closely involved in the construction of the stadium and club facilities.

“We will do everything we can to develop the club and the stadium, İlkay has always maintained close ties with Dursunbey, with Balıkesir and Turkey,” İrfan told Fanatik.

İlkay will be present at the stadium inauguration and could play a friendly on the new ground according to club president Turfan.

The stadium construction has began and will be partly financed by the Sports Ministry.

Gündoğan was born in the German city of Gelsenkirchen into a Turkish family.

Mesut Özil, the Altıntop twins, İlkay Gündoğan and Kaan Ayhan also all herald from the mining town.

The hard working midfielder was one of the central figures of the Dortmund side that reached the final of the UEFA Champions League in the 2012-13 season.

Gündoğan has four assists and two goals in 22 appearances for Dortmund this season.
