Dortmund ‘still in the race’ says Klopp [divider]

Borussia Dortmund are still in the race to progress to the next stage of the Champions League according to manager Jurgen Klopp despite losing the Last 16 first-leg game against Juventus 2-1.

“I don’t think Juve have often been under as much pressure as we put them under, although we get nothing for that. We’re still in the race after this result and that’s the most important thing,” Klopp was quoted as saying on the official UEFA website.

Klopp also underlined that his defensive approach did not work and that they showed Juventus too much respect.

“We showed respect for Juve’s quality and that led to us defending a bit deeper. The second goal was because we were too deep. To leave Morata room a few metres out is not a good idea. We conceded unnecessary goals,” he added.

Turkish international Nuri Şahin started the game as did German international of Turkish origin Ilkay Gündoğan.

The Bundesliga outfit beat Juventus 3-1 in the 1996-97 Champions League final in Munich the last time these two sides met.

Juve have not progressed past this stage of the competition since the 2002-03.
