Former Liverpool player and football pundit Jamie Carragher believes Emre Can could have a future in the Reds midfield with Steven Gerrard set to leave at the end of the season.

Can has been playing as a defender in the Reds back-three under Brendan Rodgers but did sign for Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen as a central defender.

“If he’s playing well, let him carry on. He’s still a young player and he may go into midfield with Stevie moving on in the summer,” Carragher told the official Liverpool website.

Carragher did however, underline that Can should stay in defence until the end of the season as he has performed well in his new position.

“But I think for this season he should stay there as he’s been outstanding. The defensive record has improved since he has been there,” he added.

“If you’re playing well and the team is doing well, he should stay where he is.”

Liverpool are undefeated in Premier League games in which Can has started in the back-three.

The 21-year-old has started in the Reds last 10 Premier League games, Liverpool have won eight and drawn two over the same period.
