Ex Man Utd striker believes Fenerbahce will make Europa League group stages

Fenerbahce striker Robin van Persie believes that Fenerbahce will make the Europa League group stages following their 1-0 win over Atromitos in the play-off round first-leg tie.

Van Persie scored the winning goal for Fenerbahce despite only being on the field for a few minutes.

The experienced striker was pleased to score his first goal since leaving Manchester United last month but warned his side not to underestimate the Greeks.

“It’s definitely a good result but I think it is open until the end,” he was quoted as saying by Goal.

“To get that one goal I think is very important, it’s a great result. We need to know that, while we are in a good condition, it’s only halfway.”

The 32-year-old striker was brought on for Moussa Sow on 80 minutes but only needed a single touch to bag the winning goal.

The shot was actually Van Persie’s first on target for his new club since joining from Manchester United last month.

Van Persie has yet to make a start for the Yellow Canaries due to lacking match fitness but has played in both Europe and the league.

The Istanbul giants will need just a draw at home next week to book a place in the Europa League group stages.

Fenerbahce face another away trip before the return leg however, as they take on Rizespor in the league on Sunday.
