Fenerbahce president brings distraught Man Utd fan to watch his hero live in Istanbul

Fenerbahçe fans started an online campaign to raise $2000 so that a young Robin Van Persie fan Louis Diamond could get the chance to be reunited with his hero in Istanbul back in July.

Louis became an internet sensation when a clip of the young United fan crying over the transfer of Van Persie was confirmed.

Speaking to Manchester Evening News at the time, Louis’ father Sam said: “We had to let him know before bed. He had had a long day so he was quite tired and he just burst into fits of tears.

“As cruel as it may seem I couldn’t resist getting the phone out. My wife and I can’t wait to show it to him in 10 years time when he can laugh along to it.”

Club president Aziz Yıldırım decided he would take matters into his own hands and send out an invitation to the Diamond family to watch the opening game of the season at the Şükrü Saracoğlu stadium.

The Diamond family accepted the invite and arrived in Istanbul yesterday evening. Louis will meet his idol Van Persie as well as the the rest of the Fenerbahçe team.

Van Persie completed his move from United to Fenerbahçe last month on a transfer fee reported to be worth £4.8 million and signed a three-year deal with the Istanbul giants.

The 32-year-old will make his league debut against Eskişehirspor on Friday 14 August if he recovers in time for the opening game.

The Holland international became the second United player to join the Yellow Canaries within the space of a week following the transfer of Luis Nani last month.
