The former Liverpool and England midfielder Danny Murphy has stated that he would like to see Emre Can play in his natural position next season. Can joined Liverpool as a central midfielder from Bayer Leverkusen on a £9.75 million move in the summer but has played most of the season as a defender in Reds boss Brendan Rodgers back-three.

The Germany U21 international has also played the last three games at right-back following the managers switch in formation from a 3-5-2 to a 4-3-3.

“I really want to see Emre Can moved forward into midfield next season,” Murphy told TalkSport.

Can’s strongest position has been shrouded in ambiguity this season. The 21-year-old joined the Reds as a central midfielder but played most of the season in a defensive. The likes of Dietmar Hamann and Kolo Toure have both called for Can to play in midfield.

The 21-year-old has made 36 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions this season.
