Former Manchester United star and football pundit Gary Neville has revealed that Emre Can has surprised him this season.

Neville admitted that he was sceptical that Can could play as a defender in the Premier League but admits he was proved wrong.

“He has gone beyond that early three or four games, he is now 10-12-13-14 games in and looking like a really good player which is suprising I never thought he could play there in the Premier League,” Neville said speaking on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has converted Emre Can from a central midfielder into a defender this season.

Can has played in the Liverpool back-three for the last 12 Premier League games and has started in the last 11.

The 21-year-old starred in the Reds 1-0 win against Swansea on Monday, helping Liverpool keep their eighth clean sheet in their last 11 games with Can starting in defence.

Liverpool moved two points behind fourth placed Manchester United following the away win over Swansea.

Can has now made a total of 30 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions since joining from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer.
