Brendan Rodgers has stated that needed time to adapt to life at Liverpool and that he has only played one full season in his career.

Can has been played in defence instead of his traditional central midfield role ever since making his way back into the team in the 1-0 win against Burnley on Boxing Day.

“He was always just going to need a little bit of time, moving from a new country and a very young player,” Rodgers was quoted as saying on the official Liverpool website.

“He had a little bit of experience, but you have to remember that he only had one full year of playing.

“He came through the system at Bayern Munich and went to Leverkusen, and it was only one year of playing that he’s had.”

Can is a versatile player capable of playing as a midfielder or defender. Rodgers has played Can as a defender over the last seven matches.

Liverpool have won five and drawn two of their last seven fixtures in all competitions, with the 21-year-old playing some part in all but one of those games.

Can joined the Reds on a £9.75 million move from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer.

The 21-year-old has made 14 appearances in all competitions for the Reds this season.
