“He played really well in the last five or six games bringing the ball out,” he said on Sky Sports.

“But against top-class players he’s been found wanting. He got beaten too easily and tried to rectify it and made two mistakes.”

Can played on the right side of a three man defence alongside Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho.

The 21-year-old was first deployed as a defender in the second half during Liverpool’s 1-0 win against Burnley in the Premier League and has played the last seven games in a defensive role.

Can conceded a penalty which resulted in Chelsea’s only goal of the game.

However, the 21-year-old was the third highest rated defender in the match, making six successful tackles, one interceptions and two clearances according to Whoscored.com.

Can arrived in Liverpool as a central midfielder and Carragher did highlight that the former Bayer Leverkusen star was being played out of position.

“He found it really difficult and looked like a midfielder playing at the back. People say he’s been doing well recently in relation to bringing the ball out, but it was clumsy and a penalty, no doubt about it,” he added.

The 21-year-old has made 16 appearances for the Reds this season.
