Emre Can has expressed disappointment in his own performance during Germany u21’s humiliating defeat at the hands of Portugal in the semi finals of the 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
“I talked a lot this tournament, big talk even, I wanted to win the title. I don’t know why, but for some reason, I didn’t give it my best out there. If I am honest, it is just shameful,” Emre Can told uefa.com.
“From the first minute onward we failed to find our rhythm,” the 21-year-old said. “Our mentality also wasn’t there – we just had everything missing tonight, but excuses and apologies are no help now.”
Portugal U21’s were 3-0 up at half-time following goals from Bernardo Silva, Ricardo and Ivan Cavaleiro. Joao Mario and Joao Cancelo’s completed the rout in the second half.
Emre Can’s side were unable to register on the scoresheet. Portugal now play Sweden in Prague in the final on 30 June.
The Liverpool star received a rating of 5.96 for his performance on the night. Can managed to make three tackles, two interception and no clearances.
The 21-year-old made just 49 passes from midfield and maintained a passing accuracy of 81.6% – the lowest in Germany’s midfield.
Can will return to Liverpool after a short break to begin pre-season training. The Germany U21 international is expected to play in midfield for the Red’s next season.
