Gundogan, who made just three appearances for Dortmund in the 2013-14 season due to injury, returned to form since the turn of the year and regained his place in the Germany nation team.

The 24-year-old was expected to leave the club this summer after rejecting a contract offer from Dortmund last month.

“I do not think that Gundogan would’ve made it into the first team at top European clubs like Barcelona, Bayern or Paris Saint-Germain,” Matthaus told Sport Bild.

“At Dortmund, the situation is different.”

The Germany international is set to extend his contract with Dortmund following discussions with their newly appointed manager Thomas Tuchel.

Gündoğan wrapped up the season with five assists and three goals in 33 appearances in all competitions.
