Man City summer signing eyeing Man Utd derby for return

Manchester City’s summer signing Ilkay Gundogan has revealed that he wants to return to full-fitness ahead of the Manchester derby against bitter rivals Man Utd.

The 25-year-old is currently recovering from a knee injury he suffered while at Borussia Dortmund. Gundogan dislocated his knee during training and has been ruled out for the opening weeks of the season. The 25-year-old was also left out of Joachim Low’s Germany national team squad which competed at Euro 2016 over the summer.

“I’m really looking forward to training normally with the guys and I can’t wait to get going properly – but I just have to be patient for a little while longer,” Gundogan was quoted as saying by the Manchester Evening News.

“I’m working hard on my rehab, everything is going well so I hope it will be end of August or the beginning of September – of course, it all depends on how things develop over the next few days and weeks.

“Maybe just after the World Cup qualifiers and perhaps the Manchester derby – that would be very nice.”

City take on Manchester United at Old Trafford at on September 10.  Gundogan joined City from the Dortmund for £21 million earlier this summer and is expected to play a key role in Pep Guadiola’s midfield.
