Nani recalls Man Utd victory over Shakhtar ahead of key Champions League clash

Fenerbahçe winger Nani recalled his first encounter with Shakhtar Donetsk ahead of the Champions League preliminary round clash against the Ukrainian giants.

Nani stated that he does not expect Shakhtar to be a pushover but has experience beating the Yellow Canaires Champions League opponents while he was at Manchester United.

“I know Shakhtar from when I played for Manchester United. We beat them but they will be no pushovers and have very good players,” Nani told the Milliyet.

United beat Shakhtar 1-0 at Old Trafford and drew 1-1 in the 2012-13 Champions League group stages.

Phil Jones scored the winner in United’s Group A victory over the Ukrainian side at Old Trafford. Nani did not however, make an appearance in either game as David Moyes decided to leave the Portuguese international on the bench for both games.

Nani joined Fenerbahçe on a three-year deal earlier in the month and was joined by Robin van Persie who also signed for Fenerbahçe from United.

Fenerbahçe could end up facing United in the final play-off stages should they find a way past Shakhtar in the preliminary stage.

The Yellow Canaries beat Olmypiakos 3-2 in a pre-season friendly yesterday as they continue preparations to try and ensure the new additions settle in before the Shakhtar clash at the end of the month.

The Istanbul giants have made a total of eight signings over the summer transfer window.
