TURKEY 3-1 GEORGIA: Abdullah Avci gets his first win as national team coach
The Turkish national team defeated Georgia 3-1 in the Salzburg Arena stadium, Austria. The victory marks manager Abdullah Avci's first win as head coach.
Turkey started brightly, Avci had his team lined up in a 4-3-3 setup comprised of Serdar Kurtuluş, Ömer Toprak, Egemen and İsmail Köybaşı in defense.
Valencia's Mehmet Topal featured in defensive midfield with Real Madrid duo Hamit Altintop and Nuri Şahin on either side of him.
The attacking tridente was made up of Gökhan Töre and Sercan Sararer on the wings and Mustafa Pektemek upfront.
20 year old Gökhan Töre and 22 year old Sercan Sararer were the stars of the first half, they caused a constant danger down both flanks. Töre's explosive power, pace and skill proved caused Georgia all sorts of problems.
Sercan thread through well timed through balls, cut in well and delivered dangerous balls one of which led to the opening goal in the 12th minute.
Nuri Şahin also impressed in the opening 45 minutes making well timed runs and passes from deep. He also got forward well and finished off a great move to give Turkey a two goal cushion at the half time whistle.
The second half was less impressive, Turkey lost control of the game and let Georgia dominate the match conceding a 51st minute Targamadze goal in the process.
Avci experimented with a 4-2-3-1 later on in the half, bringing on Arda Turan for Töre, Caner for Hamit, Selçuk for Şahin, Umut Bulut for Pektemek and was forced into substituting injured goalkeeper Cenk Gönen for Mert Günok.
Arda grew stronger as the match wore on, the Europa League winning Atletico Madrid midfielder created a number of chances and won the penalty which resulted in Turkey's third goal.
Defensively there were still problems, İsmail Köybaşı, Egemen Korkmaz and Serdar Kurtuluş were often caught out of position.
The one positive Avci can take from this defensive experiment is Ömer Toprak, who had a decent game and looked a lot more comfortable than his teammates.
Avci's Turkish national team is still a work in progress however, improvements are being made, this wasn't a grand performance by any measure of the scale but it was a step in the right direction.
