Burak Yilmaz attracts interest from Liverpool FC
Liverpool are reported to be monitoring Galatasaray striker Burak Yilmaz following months of speculation that the Reds are interested in the prolific striker.
The Reds are expected to have scouts watching the Intercontinental derby between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe which will be played this Sunday.
The Reds have been struggling upfront since last season and now only have one fit senior striker at the club in the form of Luis Suarez.
Liverpool were in pursuit of a proven goalscorer this summer to replace Andy Carrol who joined West Ham on loan. The Reds only scored 47 times in the Premier League last season, the lowest scoring team in the top eight.
The Reds have also struggled on the goal scoring front this season having only netted 22 times in 15 games, 18 fewer than league leaders Manchester United and the lowest total outside Stoke in the top half of the table.
In an interview with TRT's Stadyum program prior to his Galatasaray move, Yilmaz stated that he would consider a move to Spain or England if the right offer was made.
The 27-year-old striker first made a name for himself at Trabzonspor over the past two seasons.
Yilmaz guided the Black Sea giants to pole position in the 2010-11 league championship scoring 19 times, only to lose out on winning the title to Fenerbahce on goal difference.
The Turkish international striker then went onto break the clubs all time scoring record in the 2011-12, scoring 35 times, 51% of Trabzonspor's 65 goals.
Galatasaray signed Yilmaz from Trabzonspor for a modest €5 million fee during the transfer window.
Yilmaz has already scored 15 goals already this season, including six Champions League goals in five starts making him the most prolific striker in the European footballing competition.
The 27-year-old striker scored six goals in 501 minutes of Champions League football averaging a goal every 83 minutes. Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo also finished the group stages with six goals however, played a total of 540 minutes, averaging a goal every 90 minutes.
Yillmaz has one of the highest shots to goal ratio in the competition having scored six out of the 23 shots he has taken giving him a conversion rate of 26 per-cent.
UEFA, the European football body have nominated Yilmaz as a candidate for their Team of the Year award. Yilmaz was also awarded with a Man of the Match award for his performances against Braga and Cluj.
Liverpool would have to part with at least €12 million to try and prize away Galatasaray's star striker, however, the Lions are reluctant to let him go so soon and with the Champions League Round of 16 looming.
The Reds are likely to face competition from Juventus should an official bid be made, the Italian giants are also reported to be interested in the powerful striker.
Yilmaz would become the fourth Turkish player to join Liverpool should a move to the Reds materialise. Liverpool have strengthened ties with Turkey recently, completing Turkish reality series, Soccer Prince, as well as partnerships with Turkish Tourism, Misli.com and Ramsey.
