Penalties are a ‘big lottery’ says Liverpool defender following Europa League exit [divider]
Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel underlined that penalties are a lottery following their Europa League Round of 32 exit against Beşiktaş.
The Reds lost the tie 5-4 on penalties in the second leg at the Atatürk Olympic stadium.
“Penalties are always either or, it’s a big lottery,” Skrtel told the official Liverpool website.
Dejan Lovren missed the only penalty of the shoot out, blazing his spot kick over the bar to give Beşiktaş the win.
Skrtel revealed that nobody in the team blames Lovren for the miss and that these things can happen in a penalty shoot out.
“That’s football. It could happen to anyone from the team and he was the one who didn’t score, but we cannot blame him for that. That can happen and now we need to look ahead,” he added.
Liverpool will face Premier League giants Manchester City in two days time. The Reds are currently in 6th place but could move into the top four with a win.
Beşiktaş will take on last placed Balıkesirspor in the Süper Lig on the wekeend.
The Black Eagles are currently second in the league, just one point behind leaders Galatasaray.
