Turkey to beat the Czech Republic and secure their place in the knockout stages?
Turkey’s clash with the Czech Republic was always going to be the defining match in Group D. With Spain and Croatia looking to finish as the top two, Turkey will almost certainly need to beat the Czech Republic to book their spot in the next round of the competition as one of the best third-placed sides.
Because of the change in format, Turkey now have a real shot of reaching the last-16 and from there, it’s anyone’s guess. Fatih Terim’s men aren’t one of the best teams in the competition but they are much-improved and many believe that they could be dark horses this summer. After all, they have enough individual talent to spring a few shocks throughout the tournament.
At the time of writing, Coral are offering 13/8 on Turkey to win that particular contest in their football odds and betting markets. On paper, Terim’s side are certainly good enough to beat the Czech Republic and their big names could make all the difference as Turkey look to send a clear statement of intent to Europe’s elite footballing nations.
The likes of Hakan Calhanoglu, Nuri Sahin and captain Arda Turan will all play crucial roles for the national side this summer. Calhanoglu is widely regarded as one of the best set-piece takers in world football and the Turkey star will be a real threat from free-kicks and corners. Meanwhile, Sahin has showcased his talent on the biggest stage in the past and Barcelona man Turan should be relatively fresh after a hit-and-miss campaign.
But if truth be told, Turkey have now built and developed a well-rounded, organised side. Their top individual talents can help to provide a moment of inspiration when required but the key to their recent success has been reliability and sturdy defensive displays. On current form, it would take a brave man to back against Turkey this summer – especially as they have very few injury issues heading into the tournament.
And as previously mentioned, the clash with the Czech Republic is set to decide who finishes third in Group D. However, Turkey are capable of picking up a positive result against Croatia or even Spain on their day. As of June 9th, Turkey are 2/1 to crash out at the last-16 stage and the latest football odds on the entire tournament are available at Coral’s website.
Only time will tell but Turkey have plenty of potential this summer. Most people aren’t expecting Turkey to light the tournament up but they certainly have the capacity to do so – especially if they manage to pick up a positive result in either of their first two fixtures. From there, it’s all about beating the Czech Republic on June 21st… and THAT could determine whether Turkey’s Euro 2016 campaign is viewed as a success or an epic failure.
