Turkish giants back in race for £7m West Ham target

Besiktas are back in the race to sign Mario Gomez revealed club press officer Metin Albayrak.

“We have not closed the door on Mario Gomez, we have Cenk but we need another top class striker,” Albayrak told the Sabah newspaper.

Mario Gomez had revealed that he would not return to Turkey due to the political situation following the failed military coup.

Gomez was believed to have put  an end to his chapter at Besiktas after posting the following message on Facebook

“The reason for this is completely down to the political situation,” the striker said on his Facebook page.

“There are no sporting or any other reasons that have made me make this decision. It is purely down to the terrible events that happened in the last few days.”

The Germany international striker is however, reported to have had a change of heart and will not consider returning to the Black Eagles.

Gomez settled in to live in Istanbul last season and finished the season as top scorer, playing a key role in the Istanbul giants winning the league title.

Besiktas could however, face competition from West Ham who are preparing a £7 million offer for the experienced striker according to the Daily Star.

Barcelona and Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund are also reported to be in the race to sign the Germany international.

“Our fans are hopeful about Gómez returning,” Besiktas spokesperson Metin Albayrak told Dogan News Agency. “We’re monitoring his situation closely.”

“But we know that he is in talks with Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund,” he continued. “Obviously it is a difficult situation for us.”
