Turkish referee gives Chelsea controversial goal against Porto

Chelsea beat Porto 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to book a place in the Champions League Last 16 yesterday.

Turkish referee Cüneyt Çakır was joined by Bahattin Duran, Tarık Ongun, Mustafa Eyisoy, Hüseyin Göçek and Barış Şimşek for the Match Day 6 clash.

The Blues ended up winning the game convincingly but were fortunate that the additional Barış Şimşek referee spotted that the ball had crossed the line.

The decision – as to be expected – went down very well with Chelsea fans and one tweeter went as far to claim that Şimşek saves Chelsea’s season.

The victory ensured that Chelsea booked a place in the Champions League Last 16 finishing Group G in first place.

Çakır and his team had a reputation for being harsh on English club players in European competition and famously sent of Chelsea star John Terry a few seasons back but he made the right tall last night.

Şimşek was also recently praised by Mesut Özil for awarding his goal in Arsenal’s 2-0 win against Bayern Munich in the Champions League under similar circumstances.
