Turks Abroad: Arda Turan scores 1st goal, Emre Can shines for Liverpool

Arda Turan was stole the limelight as far as Turkish players plying their trade outside of Turkey were concerned scoring his first goal for Barcelona.

The bearded winger had a few reasons to celebrate the 5-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano. Turan scored for the first time since his goal for Atletico Madrid against Deportivo 457 days on Nov 30, 2014. Barca have also now won all 13 games in which Turan has featured for the reigning La Liga champions this season. The Spanish giants have scored 48 goals and conceded just nine goals over the 13 games Turan has played in.

Emre Can

Can played a starring role in Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Manchester City. The Germany international of Turkish origin made the highest number of tackles (7) and four interceptions in midfield. Can also happened to make more successful dribbles going forwards than any other player (2). Robbie Savage summed up the 22-year-old’s performance with the following tweet.

Yunus Malli

Days after bagging a brace in the 3-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen Malli played a key role in Mainz 05 beating Bayern Munich 2-1. The victory saw Mainz move into 5th place just three points off a top three spot.

Hakan Calhanoglu

Bayer Leverkusen suffered their second consecutive defeat in the league this time losing 4-1 against Werder Bremen. Calhanoglu had a decent game and took the most shots on target as well as creating two goal scoring chances but there was little else to celebrate.

Ilkay Gundogan

Gundogan put on a stellar performance in the 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund. The Germany international of Turkish origin pulled the strings in the final third making 91 passes at an 89 percent accuracy and completed the highest number of successful dribbles (5). Dortmund closed the gap with leaders Bayern Munich to just five points.

Mesut Ozil

Ozil failed to register an assist but was once again his sides most creative player. The World Cup winner provided a total of four key passes during the game, none of which were converted into goals by his teammates. The defeat saw Arsenal end the week in third place six points behind Leicester City.

Tolga Cigerci

Tolga Cigerci setup Kalou with the second goal in the 2-0 win over Frankfurt on 78 minutes as Hertha Berlin managed to keep their spot in third-place.
